Scouting Notes

Capture field observations using text, images, and audio while working directly in the field.

The Scouting Notes feature in the Carbonleap mobile app allows users to document field conditions quickly and accurately. Users can include multiple note types in a single submission, and every note is automatically geo-encoded. All notes sync to the cloud, where they are processed for extracting observations and generating alerts.

Scouting Notes are only available for farms where the user has an assigned role.

Creating a Scouting Note

To add a new scouting note, open the Scouting Notes section and create a new entry. Users can combine multiple note items in the same submission, including:

  • Text notes

  • Photos

  • Audio recordings

This supports fast, detailed field documentation.

Supported Note Types

Text Notes

For describing observations such as symptoms, damage, or growing conditions.

Images

Users can capture photos directly in the field or upload images from their device. Photos help provide visual clarity for issues identified.

Audio Notes

Users may speak observations rather than type them. Audio is useful while moving or when providing detailed walkthroughs.

A single scouting submission may contain any number or combination of these note types.

Geo-Encoding

Every individual note is geo-encoded at the moment of capture. This enables Carbonleap to:

  • Precisely locate each observation within the field

  • Build a spatial history of field issues

  • Prepare for future map-based visualization of scouting data

Map visualization is a future enhancement, but geo-location is already stored today.

Cloud Processing

After syncing, scouting notes are processed in the cloud to extract structured observations. This processing enables two outcomes:

Observations

Extracted observations become visible under Manage Data in the web platform. This creates a searchable, structured scouting history.

Alerts

When applicable, scouting data contributes to the alert engine. Alerts triggered from scouting information appear in the Monitor Farm dashboard under the Alerts tab.

This ensures field issues reported by scouts can influence the alerting system.

What You Can Document

Scouting notes may include observations such as:

  • Pest or disease symptoms

  • Water or nutrient stress

  • Leaf discoloration or canopy thinning

  • Damage from heat, frost, wind, or machinery

  • General field or crop condition updates

Scouting data becomes part of the long-term record for each field.

Cloud Sync

All scouting notes sync automatically to the cloud. Synced notes:

  • Are preserved permanently

  • Become available in Manage Data on the web

  • Feed into alert generation when applicable

No manual uploads or additional steps are required.

Viewing Notes on the Web

Uploaded notes appear in the Manage Data section of the Carbonleap web platform, where users can:

  • View text, photo, and audio entries

  • Filter and search scouting history

  • Review extracted observations

  • Monitor issues across time

Farm Access Requirements

Users will only see and create scouting notes for farms where they hold a defined role. Scouting features are not available for farms they are not assigned to.

Summary

Scouting Notes on mobile allow users to capture text, images, and audio observations directly in the field. Each note is geo-encoded and synced to the cloud, where it is processed into structured observations and used to support alert generation. This builds a complete historical record and ensures timely visibility into field conditions through both Manage Data and the Monitor Farm dashboard.
